On February 18, at the third annual After-School All Stars Los Angeles (ASAS-LA) Reaching for the Stars Gala, Dr. Sabrina Kay, Chancellor and CEO of Fremont College, was honored by Governor Schwarzenegger for her tireless work as the Chairman of ASAS.

In his speech at the Gala, Governor Schwarzenegger recognized Dr. Kay as “dedicated to giving the youth of Los Angeles hope for a better life.” Frank Baxter, former Ambassador to Uruguay and member of Fremont’s Board of Advisors, introduced Dr. Kay. Mr. Baxter praised Dr. Kay for her many achievements, both academic and professional, and her willingness to take on the responsibility for ASAS-LA. But he reminded the Gala audience that “the really great thing about Sabrina is that, with all of her talents, with all of her drive, is her kindness. We’ve never had an experience when we didn’t feel better after meeting with her, and that is a quality that she shares with all of us.”

An article in the Sunday, February 28, issue of the LA Times covered the Gala, and stated that the event grossed $700,000 for the All-Stars.

In her award acceptance speech, Dr. Kay explained that her work with ASAS-LA is inspired by the same spirit that drives Fremont College: “At Fremont, we truly believe that any student, even without a strong academic background, can receive a world-class professional education and succeed in life.” ASAS-LA has touched the lives of 80,000 children in 450 schools across the country, and Dr. Kay reminded the Gala audience that their generosity and support made these remarkable results possible.

On March 20, Sports and Rehabilitation Therapy students from Fremont College will be putting their healing talents to use, helping runners in a race against cancer. ThinkCure is a Los Angeles–based nonprofit that raises funds for cancer research, and some runners at the NPN LA Marathon 5K will be raising money to support the cause.Lance Followell, program director of Health and Wellness, said that twelve students would be giving pre- and post-event sports massage therapy in the ThinkCure tent at Dodger Stadium. The tent will be open to ThinkCure runners who raise $200 or more for their 5K run. But the event is about more than just money. Iowayna Peña, Wellness Instructor, put it best when she said, "our students are volunteering their time to provide therapeutic massage to cancer survivors, their families, and supporters of the cure."

This marks the second successful year of collaboration between Fremont College students and the ThinkCure program. Mr. Followell explained that last year’s event came about through a collaboration with Sarah Gallagher, the Director of New Media at ThinkCure, and instructor of search engine optimization and search engine marketing at Fremont. A true meeting of the minds, last year's event was a great success, and Mr. Followell looks forward to a rewarding and fulfilling experience for both the runners and the Sports and Rehabilitation Therapy students this March. Sponsored by New Performance Nutrition, the NPN LA Marathon 5K run takes place the day before the LA Marathon and is expected to draw a field of approximately 4,000 runners this year, and begins at 8 am.

The event will be held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

“So much opportunity is available when an individual focuses on education,” states Dr. Kay, who has dedicated more than 20 years of her life towards educating others to meet their potential. In this time, Dr. Kay founded California Design College (now the Art Institute of Hollywood) and Fremont College to train a new generation of designers, paralegals, business leaders and wellness professionals.

Both of her institutions are pioneers in their respective industries. CDC was the one of the first institutions to teach computer-aided fashion design, and utilized technology to improve design accuracy and efficiency. Fremont College uses Professional Action Learning™, a learning methodology developed by Dr. Kay at the University of Pennsylvania to integrate multiple learning styles and content delivery channels. Thousands of alumni from Dr. Kay’s institutions are employed today by southern California businesses.

Beyond her business endeavors, Dr. Kay has served on the ASAS-LA Board of Directors since 2004, and became Chairman in 2006, succeeding Ambassador Frank Baxter. During this time, ASAS-LA has expanded to provide after-school programs for more than 3,000 students at 21 campuses in the greater Los Angeles area. Dr. Kay is also a director of the Career College Association, Los Angeles Sports and Entertainment Commission, California Fashion Association and the Getty House Foundation. Her Sabrina Kay Charitable Foundation supports these and other charitable efforts.

Previously, Dr. Kay served as a Commissioner on the LA City Planning Commission, Director on the Golden State Scholarshare Investment Board, Chairman of the California Association for Private Postsecondary Schools; Chairman of the Independent Coalition of Private Educators Political Action Committee; board member of the Imagine American Foundation; director of LA Inc.; board member of the Weingart Center; Executive Committee member of the USC Alumni Association Board of Governors; accreditation evaluator for the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS); and board member of KAC (Korean American Coalition).

In honor of Dr. Kay’s accomplishments, ASAS-LA will present her with the “Educate” award, given annually to an individual who exemplifies the organization’s mission of providing educational opportunities and helping others achieve their potential.  Previous recipients of this award include Bonnie Reiss, University of California Regent, and The Honorable Frank Baxter, former U.S. Ambassador to Uruguay.

Dr. Kay hopes to continue inspiring others to set goals and achieve more than they thought possible.  “For my family, a better life was achieved by education, focus, hard work, and the support of great friends and mentors.” She remains involved with these organizations and others to continue breaking down the barriers that prevent individuals from reaching their potential.

If you're looking for a career as a paralegal, finding the right school can be challenging. Not only should you be looking for a top ranked education, but you should be looking to ensure job placement after completing your degree. While there are a lot of items to consider when looking into a paralegal program, few aspects are as critical as being approved by the American Bar Association (ABA). ABA approval is a mark of excellence within the legal profession.

Graduates from an ABA approved program relay to employers a high level of education, training and confidence. The following is a list of advantages of an ABA-Approved Paralegal Program over a Non-ABA Approved Program

1. EMPLOYERS PREFER ABA-APPROVED
Some state bar associations and paralegal associations, such as in the states of Colorado, Wisconsin and Nevada advocate preferences for graduates of ABA approved paralegal programs. In addition, ABA approved Paralegal degree programs prepare you for employment as a paralegal, legal assistant or in sectors such as banking, real estate and insurance.

2. APPROVED CURRICULUM
The American Bar Association has a high standard when it comes to paralegal education. The approved ABA paralegal curriculum is tailored towards providing the skills in research, document preparation, client interviews and drafting of legal documents. Most ABA approved schools will have programs of study that include Introduction to Law, Civil Procedure, Legal Research & Writing, Contracts, Family Law, Property & Probate and Legal Practice Technology. Degrees from an ABA approved school provides employer an assurance that the paralegal has received the necessary training to be a competent hire because they were trained under nationally established standards.

3. CAREER ADVANTAGE
In today's economy, you need to look for every career advantage you can get. International Paralegal Management Association members have reported that they look more favorably upon job candidates that have graduated from ABA approved paralegal schools. Some law firms, state Bar Associations and paralegal organizations support ABA approved schools and feel that it's a competitive advantage in the hiring process. They also agree that paralegals with degrees from ABA schools are more sought after.

4. PRE-LAW SPECIALIZATION
For students looking to continue their education, ABA approved paralegal schools can also prepare you for law school. The Paralegal classes you take will give you an advantage over other law school students if you decide to pursue a law degree afterwards. Many of the classes you take during the first couple of years of law school are similar to the course of study of ABA-approved paralegal schools.

5. CONCENTRATED PROGRAMS

Depending on the type of institution, general Paralegal courses can run for between two years for community and junior colleges and four years at a University. The minimum course duration for an ABA approved Paralegal institution is one - two academic years. Accelerated Paralegal associates degrees, such as the program offered at Fremont College, are is designed to ensure students finish quickly and can be completed in 15 months.

6. STANDARD OF QUALITY
In California, only 26 paralegal schools have been approved by the ABA. These schools are held to strict standards and regularly reviewed by the Standing Committee on Paralegals. A list of ABA Approved Paralegal schools can be found at the ABA Standing Committee on Paralegals’ Directory of Paralegal schools.

DID YOU KNOW?
Demand for paralegals will skyrocket 22% by 2016 according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, much faster than the average for other occupations.
