This Friday, we welcome a new class of future success stories. At New Student Orientation, our new students learn what it means to be a part of Fremont College, and how to achieve their personal and professional goals. The event is led by Tim Short, Dean of Education.

Gerry Mendoza, Assistant Director of Career and Student Services, said that Orientation is always a fast-moving, positive event. Students have a chance to meet with the people behind all of the resources on campus, including Student Services, Financial Aid, and the Registrar.

But, as he explained, “the core of Orientation is education.” New students will join in a short workshop, where they will learn and discuss what it takes to be successful at Fremont. They will also meet in groups with their department heads. The orientation takes place from 11 am–1 pm. Students will take their next step on Monday, when classes for the new module begin.

Fremont students never fail to support their community, or help others perform at their best. Two of our top Sports and Rehabilitation Therapy students will travel to the East Coast this weekend to give sports massage therapy to athletes on Long Beach Poly High School's track and field team.

These student-athletes are competing with the nation's elite at the National Scholastic Indoor Championships (NSIC) in New York City.

Sports and Rehab Therapy graduate Kristen Brice and current student James Barrett will work the event. This year also marks a passing of the baton. Iowayna Peña, instructor in the School of Wellness, is letting Kristen manage students at this competition and those to come. Iowayna explained that she worked under her wing during the last two football seasons at Poly High and almost every major event in the past two years, including the NSIC and the Texas Relays.

Iowayna is sure that Kristen will be a great leader for this event and future ones, adding that she combines her talents with a great work ethic and initiative in helping to train new students. As Iowayna put it, she “is just one of those people who will get it done and get it done right!” Look for our students at the California Relays next weekend, and the Penn Relays in April.

Paralegal Training at Fremont College
Posted on: 03/03/2010 - 7:54pm

It’s not every day that you have the chance to learn about a fascinating aspect of the law from a true professional. Today, Fremont College’s paralegal students joined in an Advanced Skills and Knowledge Workshop law with attorney Christine Wilton. Christine is an expert on bankruptcy law. The workshop began as a dynamic lecture on bankruptcy law and paralegal career opportunities. But it quickly turned into a high-energy question and answer session with more than twenty participants.

Students were interested and actively involved in all parts of the discussion, even when the discussion grew technical. Christine explained that creativity was crucial when looking for paralegal work. Today, she said, it is possible for lawyers and paralegals to do business almost entirely online. But she reminded students about the importance of networking and integrity. “Even on the Internet, who you know and a good reputation are crucial” in finding work.

Gerry Mendoza, Assistant Director of Career and Student Services, said that Christine would be back for another workshop within the next ten to twelve weeks. Expect another informative and exciting workshop when she does.
