Leslie Amato, Legal Studies Valedictorian, and Advisor Tom Levyn
Posted on: 07/02/2010 - 11:29am

Graduation this weekend was a moment to recognize the hard work and dedication of our graduates, as well as a chance for the highest achievers to speak directly to the entire Fremont College community. Leslie Amato, Valedictorian for the College of Legal Studies, and Rachelle Moniz, Valedictorian for the College of Wellness, both delivered speeches that truly embodied our mission of preparing students for success in their future careers.

Leslie began her speech with a heartfelt and powerful thanks to the Fremont College team, teachers and staff alike: “Without your hard work and dedication, we wouldn’t have gotten to this day. You have given us a new window on the world, a different way to look at life. We shouldn’t look at this as an end, but as a great, new beginning. Education is everywhere, and we should embrace it, and make it a part of our daily lives. Education makes us fearless, gives us pride, and makes us feel we have truly accomplished something, and no one can ever take that away. Thanks to you, we are prepared to go out into the world, and take on whatever challenges come next in our lives.”

In her speech, Leslie also spoke about the diversity of our student body, which makes the entire Fremont College community even richer: “We all followed a different path to this place, whether straight out of high school, coming from another college, or like me, one of the legions of displaced workers looking for a lifeline and a new lease on life. I am so thankful to have met all of you.”

In a speech that had moments of fun and humor, Rachelle also directed an emotional “thank you” to her classmates, family, and friends, beginning with Lance Followell, Director of Health and Wellness, and Iowayna Peña, Instructor for Health and Wellness: “If it weren’t for the two of you, I wouldn’t be standing here today. Your dedication, passion and endless support have inspired each of us to move forward and succeed. To all my classmates, I am so proud of your accomplishments and I am grateful for the time we’ve spent together. Work hard and be kind. Last but not least, I want to thank my family and friends for your love and patience throughout my journey. Your belief in me has made me want to do better than my best.”

It’s only natural that these speeches made such an impression on the family, friends, and classmates who were gathered at Commencement. But what was unexpected was the effect that both speeches had on the Advisors who took part in the event. During the Commencement ceremony itself, as well as in the days that followed, our Advisors recognized the professionalism, passion, and talent that fueled these speakers and the entire graduating class at Fremont College.

Commencement is a time for the entire Fremont College community to celebrate the achievements of our graduates, with joy in our hearts as we see them on the path to success, but with tears in our eyes as we watch them move on. Our 2010 Commencement ceremony was held last Saturday, June 26, at the Long Beach Westin.

Shawn Hunter, President and CEO of Chivas USA and member of the Advisory Board for the College of Wellness, inspired our graduates with a keynote speech about finding success by building your personal brand. As he explained, earning a degree is one of the first branding opportunities that you have, but what you do after graduation can be even more important as you continue to develop your brand. Shawn is a walking example of this philosophy, as a recent profile in the Los Angeles Times proves.

There were some moments of laughter during the ceremony, such as some good-natured teasing in the speech of Advisory Board member Steven Gourley. But a reminder of what the Fremont College experience is all about came from Rachelle Moniz’s speech. Rachelle, our Valedictorian for the College of Wellness, gave a speech that brought smiles to the room, but concluded with heartfelt and tearful thanks to Lance Followell, Director of Health and Wellness, and Iowayna Peña, Instructor in Health and Wellness. Even Lee Paige, who served as Master of Ceremonies for Commencement, and Armen Orujyan, who introduced our College of Wellness Spirit Award recipient, remarked on the power of Rachelle’s speech.

And before the ceremony began, our Board of Governors convened for a morning meeting, ensuring that Fremont College continues to prepare the students of today for the careers of tomorrow.

Please stay posted to the site for more photos and videos from this year’s commencement.

Sabrina Kay Career College Industry Leader
Posted on: 06/04/2010 - 5:48pm

As another milestone in a remarkable career, Fremont College Chancellor and CEO Dr. Sabrina Kay was acknowledged by Career College Central as one of the year’s most influential executives in the career college industry. The article in the May 2010 issue recognizes these influential figures as people who are willing to step into the spotlight and bring a positive focus on the industry.

In her profile, Dr. Kay explains that one of Fremont College’s great successes lies in being able to provide an excellent education to students with different backgrounds and educational needs. One of the ways we have been able to achieve this educational mission is Dr. Kay’s research and development of Professional Action Learning. Dr. Kay took a similar approach with her first success, California Design College, where she developed a curriculum based around computer drawing software, and used it to train a generation of young fashion designers.

The article highlights Dr. Kay’s devotion to demonstrating the positive influence that the career college industry has made, both in the world of education, and in the lives of the students it has touched. She has been able to communicate this influence through her tireless involvement and leadership in local and national civic, charitable, political, and business organizations.

But, as Dr. Kay explains, she begins every day with the inspiration of helping students improve their own lives through the power of education: “My most invigorating motivation for working in the career college sector is being able to share the beginning hope of our students’ new lives and experience the thrill of their accomplishments. Our students’ stories inspire me every day.”
