next gen iphone ios 4 retina display

Unless you've been off the grid (or in a cave) for the past few weeks, you've been hearing rumors about the next-generation iPhone and iOS 4. From leaked prototypes to grainy demonstration videos, the internet has been buzzing with speculation about what Steve Jobs will pull out of his top hat. After the dust has settled, this is what we think some of the biggest differences iOS 4 and the next-gen iPhone will make in education.

1. Teleconferencing
This single feature alone will revolutionize learning and the possibilities for higher education are endless. The front-facing camera will finally allow for an iPhone to iPhone videoconferencing, enabling students to communicate with a potentially endless number of students, whether on the same campus, another campus or online. Students will also begin to interact with teachers or industry experts and get immediate answers to their questions. All while done in an instant and completely mobile environment. Students will be able to interact, collaborate, share and deliver presentations from anywhere in the world.

2. Faster processor and multitasking capabilities
With the jump to the same A4 processor used in the iPad, your educational applications will load and run even faster. And multitasking with iOS 4 will give you the ability to move from your electronic textbook to quickly checking out more information on Wikipedia.

3. View and high-resolution multimedia presentations
Even with the previous generation iPhone, viewing videos wasn't always perfect. With the 960 x 640 "Retina display" technology, which has never been imitated before on a phone, you'll be able to view videos, powerpoint and keynote presentations, and text even more clearly than you ever could. Mobile computing is no longer just a tradeoff. You'll have almost 80% of the resolution that you could have on an iPad, with the portability of a phone form factor. And with iMovie for iPhone: you'll be able to create and edit your own movies, without having to ever move over to a computer. And being able to record in less than perfect lighting conditions will give you even more freedom to work anywhere.

4. Longer battery life
With the recent increase in online learning in the past decade, the students of tomorrow will not only be online, but on the go. The new iPhone comes with an improved battery life, and allows for more time away from your computer, whether it's creating movies and presentations for your classes, reading your textbooks in the palm of your hand, or collaborating with your classmates.

5. GPS
Learning doesn't always happen in the classroom. Students in the future will be able to take field trips at the time that works best for them. While the GPS feature is already a standard feature on the iPhone, the utilization of GPS and location-based learning will be a growing segment for college, university, and online students in the next few years. With companies such as FourSquare and GoWalla leading the location based check-in systems, its only a matter of time before you begin to see educationally-styled tours where students check in at specific locations to complete the learning requirements.

6. The iBook Store
The iPad took the first step to bringing libraries into the palms of our hands. Now you'll be able to use an interface as simple as iTunes to purchase books. You can pick up your textbooks and find new sources of knowledge to expand your horizons.

7. Educational Apps
With improved features, its only a matter of time before more educational apps begin to utilize the video, GPS and the higher processing power. Watch for apps such as Dictionary.com, NASA, Shakespeare, Maps of the World, Free Spanish Tutor, Leonardo Da Vinci HD, and Fashion Sketchbook to continue to improve their apps to maximize learning and collaboration.

Copyright is a hot issue in the music, film, and software industries, but regulations are much less strict in the world of fashion. According to Johanna Blakley’s recent talk at TEDxUSC, this absence of strong copyright policies has been responsible for both strong sales and a thriving culture of innovation. For students interested in fashion design, or any part of the design business, this is definitely worth watching.
